It served as a potent symbol of regional power in Manchuria until the Northeast Flag Replacement incident in 1928, when Zhang Xueliang declared allegiance to the Nationalist government in Nanjing, effectively ending the clique's independence and retiring this banner in favor of the Nationalist flag.
