✒️ The Flag of the Iron Front, prominently featuring three parallel arrows, is a significant political symbol originating from the Weimar Republic in Germany. The design, typically consisting of three white or black arrows on a red background, points diagonally downwards from the upper right to the lower left. The arrows were designed in 1931 by Russian biologist and political activist Sergei Chakhotin, then active with the German Social Democratic Party (SPD). The symbol was created for the Iron Front (Eiserne Front), a paramilitary organization established to defend liberal democracy against totalitarian ideologies. The three arrows explicitly symbolized the struggle against the three primary enemies of the republic at the time: Nazism (the Nazi Party), Communism (the Communist Party of Germany), and reactionary monarchism. The Iron Front was formed on November 16, 1931, by the Social Democratic Party (SPD) along with several trade unions and other liberal groups. The three-arrow design was not only rich in symbolism but also practical; it was designed to be easily and quickly painted over the Nazi swastika. Although the Iron Front was banned by the Nazis upon their seizure of power in 1933, its symbol endured. After World War II, it was adopted by various socialist, social democratic, and anti-fascist movements across Europe and beyond. In contemporary times, the Three Arrows symbol has been widely embraced by modern anti-fascist (Antifa) groups, particularly in North America and Europe, where it continues to represent opposition to fascism, authoritarianism, and far-right ideologies.
