βœ’οΈ The state flag of Alaska features eight gold stars forming the Big Dipper and the North Star on a dark blue field. Designed in 1927 by Benny Benson, a 13-year-old Alaska Native orphan, the flag was originally created for the Territory of Alaska and was retained as the state flag when Alaska achieved statehood in 1959. The Big Dipper symbolizes strength, as it is part of the constellation Ursa Major (the Great Bear), while the North Star represents Alaska's northern location and its future as a state. The blue field stands for the sky, the sea, and the forget-me-not, the territorial flower. Benson’s design was chosen in a contest sponsored by the American Legion, and it remains a source of pride and identity for Alaskans.
