The 25 stars signify Arkansas as the 25th state to join the Union, while the single star above represents the Confederacy, and the three below have multiple interpretations: they stand for the countries that have ruled Arkansas (Spain, France, and the United States), the year of the Louisiana Purchase (1803), and Arkansas’s membership in the Confederacy. The flag, originally designed by Willie Kavanaugh Hocker, was officially adopted in 1913 and has undergone several modifications since.
