โ๏ธThe Flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran is a horizontal tricolor composed of green, white, and red bands with the national emblem centered in red. The design was adopted following the 1979 Iranian Revolution led by Ruhollah Khomeini, which transformed Iran from a monarchy into an Islamic republic. The upper green band traditionally represents growth, hope, and Islam; the white central band symbolizes peace and honesty; and the red band reflects courage and martyrdom. Along the borders between the stripes runs a repeating Kufic script reading Allahu Akbar (โGod is Greatestโ), repeated 22 times to commemorate the 22nd day of Bahman in the Iranian calendar, the date marking the victory of the revolution.
At the center of the flag is the distinctive red national emblem introduced in 1980, replacing the former Lion and Sun symbol used under the Pahlavi dynasty. The emblem is a stylized representation combining elements of the word Allah with a tulip motif, a flower that in Persian symbolism commemorates those who die for the nation. Today the Iranian flag functions both as the official national flag of the Islamic Republic and as a widely recognized political and cultural symbol associated with the ideology of the post-revolutionary Iranian state.
