✒️ The flag of the German Empire, used from 1867 to 1919, was a horizontal tricolor. It consisted of three equal bands of black, white, and red. These colors were chosen by Otto von Bismarck and were first used by the North German Confederation. After the Franco-Prussian War and the unification of Germany, the flag was adopted by the newly formed German Empire. The black-white-red tricolor remained the national flag throughout the Empire's existence. It was used on land and at sea, with variations featuring the Prussian eagle for naval ensigns. The flag was ultimately discarded in the wake of Germany's defeat in World War I and the subsequent establishment of the Weimar Republic.
