βœ’οΈ The Red Army Faction (RAF), also known as the Baader-Meinhof Group, was a far-left militant organization active in West Germany from 1970 to 1998. Founded by Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin, Ulrike Meinhof, and others, the RAF sought to challenge what it perceived as capitalist oppression, imperialism, and the legacy of fascism in postwar Germany. The group engaged in a campaign of bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, and bank robberies, targeting symbols of state and corporate power. Influenced by Marxist-Leninist and anti-imperialist ideologies, the RAF operated in several loosely connected generations over its lifespan. Though it disbanded in 1998, the RAF remains one of the most well-known and controversial examples of postwar leftist militancy in Europe.
